An infestation of stinging insects in your home or commercial property should be addressed immediately to prevent the further expansion of the nest. There are a few types of stinging insects that can pack a punch if they sting you. At Midwest Pest Solutions, we are trained to carefully remove those pests, such as wasps, hornets, and many others. In the Chicago, IL area, we are lucky that the total number of stinging insect species you need to be concerned about is limited. However, these individual species are numerous when establishing a thriving colony.
Wasps, hornets, and Yellow Jackets are most active just when you are ready to enjoy the warm days of summer. Most of us have experienced cooking on the barbeque, only to be visited by an annoying flying stinging insect. Even before you have had a chance to eat the first bite, a pesky Yellow Jacket is flying around the hamburgers, watermelon, and trying to land on the potato salad. They are pests in every sense of the word.
Finding out where the nest is located can be difficult. Yellow Jackets will build their nests in cavities that are heavily concealed and often are underground. The nest will have a single queen and generally only last a single season, especially in our climate. Colonies reach a peak capacity of up to 3,000 individuals during May through August. The German Yellow Jacket is extremely bold and aggressive and can painfully sting you repeatedly as part of their colony defense strategy. Removing a Yellow Jacket nest while avoiding getting stung is no easy task and best left to trained professionals.
The Bald-Faced Hornet is one you do not want to mess with. They have a distinct look with a striking black body with white markings. These hornets build aerial nests, generally in trees which makes spotting a nest easier. They are known to defend their territory and should be given plenty of room until the nest has been removed. The nest can hold up to 700 creatures ready to protect the queen.
Paper Wasps have smaller colonies and generally build nests on tree limbs. They are commonly found under building eaves, beams, and in attic supports, garages, and sheds. While less aggressive, by nesting closer to homes, homeowners encounter them frequently. These nests are very distinctive as they are open, and the cells are visible.
While wasps, hornets, and Yellow Jackets are common problems, we have a strange stinging caterpillar that is important to keep your eye out for in Illinois. In its larval form, the American Dagger Moth is covered in long, bright yellow/green bristles that look like eyelashes and will break off and embed into your skin, emitting toxins that cause a deep stinging sensation. They are often found in backyards and schoolyards due to their favorite habitat, trees like oak, ash, willow, and maple.
If you think you have spotted a Yellow Jacket, hornet, or wasp nest on or around your property, give us a call at 708-439-1324 for a free estimate. Midwest Pest Solutions is ready to help you enjoy your backyard year-round by removing these stinging insects and keeping them away.

Yes! For roughly 24 hours, you will see foraging wasps return to their nest, which is no longer there. They may be irritated, so we recommend staying away from this area until there are no more stinging insects. To schedule your wasp nest removal, please call 708-439-1324 today!
Yes, but it’s not something we recommend. It takes special skills to remove stinging insects safely. Hornets and yellow jackets are far more challenging (and dangerous) to remove than paper wasps. So if you decide to treat a nest on your own, please proceed with caution. Follow standard safety protocols like treating the nest at night and wearing a wasp suit sealed at the wrists, ankles, and collar.
We know how scary stumbling upon a wasp nest is. This is especially true if you or a loved one are allergic to wasp stings. So we do our best to remove wasp nests from homes in our service area within 24 hours. If you’re dealing with hornets, yellow jackets, paper wasps, or any other stinging insects, please give us a call at 708-439-1324 today!
